The postcode lottery of young-driver insurance, mapped
Vouched has mapped what 17–24-year-olds can expect to pay for car insurance across every neighbourhood in Great Britain — down to street level. The differences are stark, and they're free to explore.
The numbers
- 2,773 postcode districts priced for young drivers, covering England, Scotland and Wales.
- Neighbourhood-level (LSOA / Data Zone) resolution on the interactive map — the cheapest fifth of neighbourhoods sit under £339 expected annual premium; the most expensive fifth above £882.
- 164 first cars tracked with full running costs — insurance, tax, fuel and MOT — every figure cited to a public source.
- Calibrated against 106 published premium anchors (R² 0.9304), last calibrated 2026-07-18.
Story angles
- The postcode lottery: two 18-year-olds with the same car can face premiums hundreds of pounds apart a few streets from each other.
- Regional league tables: cheapest and most expensive areas for young drivers in your city or region — we can cut the data to your patch.
- The £1,000 first year: what a first car really costs a 17-year-old today — premiums are at a 10-year low, but insurance is still the biggest line.
- Myth-busting: automatics that are cheaper to insure than manuals; the models that fail their MOTs most (real DVSA data).
Methodology, in one paragraph
Expected premiums model a new driver on a comprehensive black-box policy, calibrated against published young-driver premium datasets and scaled to local area risk. Running costs combine live government fuel prices (DESNZ weekly feed), DVSA MOT bulk results, VED rates and typical market prices. Everything is an indicative estimate, clearly labelled — never a quote — and every figure traces to a cited public source. Full methodology available on request.
