Where you live changes your premium more than what you drive
Two real levers on a first-car insurance premium — district and car choice — priced from our own data on the same axis, so you can see which one is actually moving your number.
Two things move your first-car insurance premium more than anything else you can actually choose: where you live, and which car you buy. Every buying guide covers the second one. Almost none of them price the first against it, on the same axis, so you can see which lever is bigger. We can, because we hold both datasets — the district-level risk index behind our risk map and the modelled premium for every car in our set — so here's the actual comparison, at age 19.
The district lever
Across every one of the districts we model, the cheapest is LA20 at £534 a year; the dearest is LS2 at £4,243. That's a full national swing of £3,709 a year on the same car, same age, same everything else — only the postcode changes.
We don't hold a name for either place, and we're not going to guess one: our data has no district-name field and no map of which areas border which, so every district on this page is a code, exactly as its own risk map page is. What we can tell you is what the code's modelled premium looks like, not what the place is like.
| District | Rank among all districts | Est. annual at 19 |
|---|---|---|
| LA20 | Cheapest | £534 |
| IV10 | ~17th percentile | £729 |
| PO11 | ~33th percentile | £902 |
| PE5 | ~50th percentile | £1,261 |
| S97 | ~67th percentile | £1,886 |
| WC1R | ~83th percentile | £2,593 |
| LS2 | Dearest | £4,243 |
Figures checked July 2026
Heads-up: Market update (27 July 2026): two major insurer groups — including the cheapest black-box provider in most of our data — left the comparison panel we calibrate against, and cheapest quotes for young drivers rose roughly 50%. Our estimates now track this new, higher market. If those insurers return, real quotes could come in below the range shown — get a real quote before you budget.
The car-choice lever
Now the other axis, held to the same standard: within the group-15-and-under cohort our risk map's own headline figure is built from — the sensible, insurable-as-a-first-car end of our dataset, not every car we hold — the cheapest to insure at 19 is the Fiat 500 1.2 (2008–2019) at £1,771 a year; the dearest is the Toyota Prius 1.8 VVT-i Hybrid Active (2015–2022) at £3,390. That's a full swing of £1,619 — the most car choice alone can move your premium within that cohort, London-anchored, no postcode applied.
Which one actually moves the number more
At today's figures, the district lever wins. The full national swing from picking your district (£3,709) is bigger than the full swing from picking your car within the sensible cohort above (£1,619) — roughly 2.3× the size. Where you end up living moves your premium more than which of these cars you buy.
Both numbers above are the FULL range each lever can produce — the true extremes, not a typical day-to-day move. We're comparing maximum-available-swing to maximum-available- swing, on purpose: it's the only like-for-like way to put a place and a car choice on the same axis. A move between two ordinary districts, or a swap between two ordinary cars, will usually shift your number by less than either figure above.
What this means for you
If you're choosing between two flats, two towns, or two university cities, it's worth checking your own district's figure before you assume the car is the lever doing all the work — look yours up on the risk map. And whichever district you land in, the car still matters: run your own age, postcode and shortlist through the First Car Finder to see both levers pulling together on a real number, not the London-anchored, no-postcode figures on this page.
These are modelled estimates from public data, not quotes. Both levers above are calibrated for a black-box (telematics) policy; the district figures apply no confidence discount of their own beyond what the underlying car estimate already carries. Vouched does not give insurance advice; when you're ready, we introduce you to authorised providers for a real quote.
