Your first electric car: what it really costs to charge
The real modelled gap between charging an EV at home and charging it exclusively in public, per car, at our own average-mileage assumption — priced, not just cited.
Every electric first car on our site is priced, in every running-cost figure we show, at the capped home electricity rate — on purpose, as a conservative ceiling. But most first-time EV buyers won't always be able to charge at home: a flat with no driveway, a term away at university, a long trip. The gap between charging at home and charging exclusively at public chargers is the real decision behind “what does an EV actually cost to run,” and it's one nobody on the site had put a number on until now.
The gap, per car
At 6,500 miles a year — our site's own average-mileage assumption — home charging costs what it costs at the Ofgem-capped rate, 26.1p/kWh. Charging the same car exclusively at public chargers, Zapmap's own published UK range of 54–79p/kWh applies instead — roughly two to three times the home rate, before efficiency even enters it.

Heads-up: Market update (27 July 2026): two major insurer groups — including the cheapest black-box provider in most of our data — left the comparison panel we calibrate against, and cheapest quotes for young drivers rose roughly 50%. Where the gap is smallest and largest
The Fiat 500e Action 24kWh (70kW) (2021–2026), the most efficient car in our EV set at 4.8 mi/kWh, has the smallest gap: home charging runs £354 a year, public runs £731–£1,070 — a difference of £378–£716 a year. The Nissan Leaf 40kWh (2018–2022), at 3.0 mi/kWh, has the largest: home £566, public £1,170–£1,712 — a gap of £604–£1,146. Efficiency alone roughly doubles the size of the gap between the two ends of our set, on top of the two to three times the home-vs-public rate difference already does.
The lesson isn't “don't buy an EV if you can't charge at home” — even the public-only figures above are often still cheaper than filling a petrol car doing the same mileage. It's that the gap is large enough to actually plan around: if home or workplace charging is realistic for you, it's worth roughly £378–£1,146 a year depending on the car, and that's before insurance, tax or anything else changes.
Why the gap moves by car
The only thing that changes the size of the gap car-to-car is efficiency — miles per kWh. A less efficient EV needs more electricity for the same mileage, so both the home figure and the public figure scale up together, and the pound gap between them scales with it. It has nothing to do with battery size, brand, or price: a cheap, efficient small EV can have a smaller home-vs-public gap than an expensive, thirstier one.
These are modelled estimates from public data, not quotes. The home rate is the Ofgem price cap's Direct Debit unit rate, which moves with the cap; the public range is Zapmap's own published snapshot (Jun 2026) and moves with the public-charging market, not with anything this site controls.
